Optical illusion “afterimage”
These optical illusions are based on a phenomenon called “post-image”.
A similar phenomenon occurs when photoreceptors, mainly cones in the eyes, become excessively irritated and tired, causing loss of sensation.
In normal everyday life, we don't notice this because small eye movements keep the cones on the back of the eye from becoming excessively irritated.

However, if you're looking at a larger image, tiny eye movements don't do so well with overstimulation.
As a result, you see what is known as a negative afterimage. When you move your eyes to a white sheet, overexcited cells continue to send a weak signal, so the colors affected remain muted.
However, the surrounding photoreceptors that are not tired send strong signals, just as if we are looking at opposite colors. The brain perceives these signals as opposite colors, creating a color image out of the negative.
