Bora Bora is a tourist paradise. The unique ecosystem of the island created by the coastal lagoon and coral rhymes is a riot of colors and the brightness of the tropical sun. And there were also historical events that left an imprint on the tourist diversity of the island. No less interesting are modern sights and events: international ethno-festivals and art galleries. But you should start the journey with the unique natural objects of the Pacific pearl.
Natural attractions
The natural riches of Bora Bora are a bright mix of jungles, volcanic soil and high rocks against the backdrop of a seascape. There are unique natural objects on the island, which should not only be told about. They definitely need to be visited if you have the opportunity to be in this paradise of Polynesia.
Mountain peaks of the island
There is nothing more beautiful than meeting the dawn or waiting for sunset against the backdrop of the mountain peaks of Bora Bora. There are several of them, and each is unique in its own way.
Not everyone will be able to overcome the highest peak of the island, but even a walk along the slopes of the mountains will leave an unforgettable impression.
Otemanu
The most majestic peak of a tropical island. Otemanu is located almost in the center of Bora Bora and is visible from any point. Only those who already have experience in mountain tourism will be able to climb this peak. The main danger is the volcanic origin of the rock: it crumbles and slides under your feet. In addition, the height of almost a kilometer is for physically trained people. But such ascents can also be made, although they will not be allowed to climb the peak itself anyway – it is believed that the peak is dangerous even for professionals. An unforgettable view of the atoll opens from the slopes of the majestic Otemanu.
Pahia
The ascents of Pahiya are more popular. It is easier and safer to climb it. You can do it yourself, but it’s still better with a guide and a minimum set of knowledge on mountain tourism. Plus of this trip, which is delayed for at least one light day – magnificent views on the top. Such a panorama of the island with a 360° view can not be seen anywhere else on Bora Bora.
The legend of Pahiya. A legend is connected with the peak, which says that it is through it that the path between the gods and the inhabitants of the island is paved. And the time will come when heaven and earth will close in this place, and the road will be open to higher powers through the Pakhia passes.
Mataihua
The peak is even for not very experienced travelers. The views here are also magnificent, and walking at the foot of Mataihua is a meeting with the tropical jungle and the beauty of the evergreen ocean of Bora Bora vegetation.
Faanui Valley
The valleys on Bora Bora are magnificent. And Faanui is worth special attention. There are many hibiscus flowers growing there and in the flowering season this place can be compared to the Garden of Eden lost by mankind.
Bora Bora Lagoonarium: aquarium in the open ocean
From this attraction it is worth starting a trip to Bora Bora and ending. Something unimaginable – a mini-ocean in direct access. Lagunarium is a part of the lagoon of the island separated from the open sea, where the inhabitants of the oceanic expanses live. Such a natural aquarium, but on an impressive scale.
Diving and submarine trip
You can dive into this world both with the help of scuba gear and on a small submarine. Here you can easily meet stingrays, ocean turtles, yellow sharks and fish. The latter, because of their motley coloring, seem to be a masterpiece of the designer. Guided tours and instructors are organized, and therefore everything is absolutely safe. Including feeding sharks is one of the most unforgettable sights.
Where it is located: on a small island in the eastern part of Bora Bora, near the resort of The St Regis Bora Bora.
Visit: Prices for adults range between 6200-9500 Pacific francs. For children from 3 to 10 years old, admission is half price. Half-day and full-day excursions are available.
Matira Beach
The snow-white sand of the beach open at any time of the day attracts many tourists. The beach is well equipped. There are many attractions for active tourism.
Historical and cultural places
The thousand-year history of Bora Bora is the timid steps of the first settlers who arrived here on fragile boats and the majestic port battery of powerful cannons that were installed to protect the island from invaders during the Second World War.
Bora Bora Cannons
The artillery platform and giant cannons scattered along the slopes of the shores are a memory of the events of the Second World War. The island, after the devastating defeat of the American fleet at Pearl Harbor, temporarily became part of the outpost of the American Navy. Powerful forts, an airfield and a port for military vessels were built here. Even now, these 13-ton guns look formidable and majestic, although no live shots were fired from them.
Where to see: the guns are located from the east and west bays of the island. Two guns stand at the top of Mount Fitiiu. People usually stop near them for photos – the view here is wonderful, and the formidable guns of the Second World War create a contrast with the peaceful, green and meditation-filled space of the island.
Saint Pierre-Celestin – temple at the foot of the mountain
The new Catholic church in Vaitap Saint Pierre-Celestin is located in a picturesque corner of the island. It was built in 2016 by the efforts of local parishioners. The snow-white broken dome attracts not only locals, but also tourists.
It is especially interesting to visit the temple during the services. You can see local residents in white clothes – symbols of Christian purity and faith according to local custom.
The parishioners of the church say that the Christmas Mass here, among the hot tropical climate, gives unforgettable emotions.
The Maritime Museum in Bora Bora
Bertrand Darras’ Private Maritime Museum (Musee De Marine) is a unique place on the island. Miniature copies of frigates and traditional Polynesian vessels created by master Bertrand Darras are collected here. The opening hours of the museum are negotiated in advance, since its owners count on specific visitors.
Contemporary Art Galleries
Bora Bora is a place where contemporary artists live and work. Someone is striving to create canvases in new directions, someone is closer to the classical manner of depicting nature and island life. Everyone has their own style and their own vision.
Bora Bora Turtle Center
The Bora Bora Turtle Rescue and Breeding Center is not only engaged in scientific research, restores the natural balance, but also invites guests to communicate with these amazing animals directly. The Center was created with private funds and works closely with the Government of Polynesia and the Department of the Environment. The Bora Bora Turtle Center has developed and implements programs aimed at raising awareness about the protection of marine species. Here, if necessary, injured turtles are treated and after rehabilitation they try to adapt them to return to their natural habitat. The center also studies the ecosystem of coral reefs.
Bloody Mary’s Restaurant
This restaurant with a name that migrated from the name of the famous cocktail is the most stellar place on the island. A special corner in the interiors of the restaurant stores the names of 230 famous visitors, among whom almost all the most famous actors and artists of Hollywood and Europe. It’s enough to name Pierce Brosnan (Agent 007), Jane Fonda, Marlon Brando, Janet Jackson, Julio Iglesias, Denis Devito, Harrison Ford, Johnny Depp. You can sit in a cafe at tables right on the sand, and you need to order a visit to the restaurant in advance.
