Incredible facts
Despite the fact that astronauts in orbit are currently not allowed to drink alcohol, a new study argues that in fact, red wine can have a positive effect on both the results of their work, and on their health.
The study has shown that red wine can prevent the harmful effects of prolonged exposure of the human body to a state of weightlessness. Experts emphasize that the ingredient contained in red wine, called resveratrol, protects bone tissue from loss of density and insulin resistance, because this is exactly what causes bone tissue to lose density and insulin resistance, as astronauts usually suffer.
The conclusion is based on a study of rats suspended upside down by the hind limbs and tail in order to simulate weightlessness. Rats treated with resveratrol managed to avoid negative consequences and the development of adverse symptoms associated with their conditions, which was not the case with rats in the second group.
“This is the first time we are talking about simple countermeasures that prevent negative effects on the body as a result of mechanical stress,” says a team of researchers at Strasbourg University, led by Iman Momken. The scientists added that resveratrol could thus be considered a countermeasure during space travel, however, research involving humans has yet to be carried out.
Not just for space
The researchers say that their findings may concern not only astronauts, but also those people who lead a sedentary lifestyle and do not move much. “There is a wealth of information that says, shows and proves that physical activity is essential for the human body, but many of us find it difficult to follow this kind of advice,” says Dr. Gerald Weissmann.
“Low gravity makes physical activity impossible for astronauts. For people on the ground, the reasons for the lack of physical activity can be as follows: illness, trauma, or office work. Resveratrol cannot be a substitute for physical activity, but it can slow down the deterioration of the body until a person returns to normal life,” he continues.
Will NASA astronauts fly into space with alcohol?
Despite the health benefits, NASA is not positive about this issue and is not ready to supply its astronauts with wine yet. NASA regulations prohibit astronauts from drinking alcohol during space travel, as well as 12 hours before departure into orbit.
