The Sossusflei Plateau is the most visited part of the desert by travelers, which is part of the Namib Nayukluft National Park. The dunes of the Namib Desert are the highest in the world. Almost all the dunes are numbered or named.
The sand of the Namib desert has a red tint, which is due to the high iron content. Some grains of sand are coated with iron oxide, which gives them a characteristic red color. In some places there are two-colored red-yellow dunes.
The main vegetation of the Sossusfle is camel acacia.
One of the attractions of Namibia is the Skeleton Coast National Park. Yes, it is so called precisely because there are many skeletons of whales near the surf line.
Also in Sossusflei is the famous Dead Valley – the Valley of Death with dried camel acacia trees. Skeletons of trees sticking out around the lake are preserved for a long time thanks to the dry desert air, since there is not enough humidity for decomposition. The landscape is simply striking in its lifelessness.
The temperature of the sand in these places reaches 75 degrees. The Dead Valley was formed about 900 years ago when sand dunes blocked the access of water to this area.
The best time to visit the desert and the plateau of Sossusflei is at sunrise or sunset, when the colors are the brightest.
