Travelers who try to lead an eco-friendly lifestyle often have a question: how to combine the convenience of flights with the fact that it is still one of the “dirtiest” modes of transport? Not flying at all? We are trying to figure out how to find a balance and make our movements around the world the least harmful to the environment.

Fly direct flights.
The largest amount of emissions occurs during takeoff and landing of the aircraft. Therefore, if you have the opportunity, choose direct flights, without transfers.

If there is no possibility, mix planes with ground transport.
Hybrid rides are a new trend. Well, it’s true: it’s not difficult to get to the airport in another city by bus, train or hitchhiking. Especially if it is within the same country. And especially if the travel time will not differ significantly.

Do not book a ticket right away, first read about the airline.
What planes does she use? And what kind of fuel? Experts say that if the plane is newer, most likely, it will be more environmentally friendly. Therefore, companies that regularly update their fleet offer more effective ways to reduce CO2 emissions.

It’s the same with fuel. It is known for sure that Airbus is working on the creation of hydrogen-fueled aircraft. And what about the others?

Fly economy class.
The more passengers per square meter, the less fuel is spent per person. And although this does not guarantee a reduction in emissions (what if the airline does not sell all the tickets?), it definitely increases the possibility.

According to statistics, business class passengers generate 2-3 times more CO2 emissions than economy class passengers. Wizz Air even tried to encourage the European authorities to ban it at the legislative level. But so far, no one has gone to such radical methods. As well as on the ban of private planes.

Fly less (or slower) for work.
Travel companies say that in recent years about 20% of trips happen at work. Before the pandemic, this figure was almost twice as high. But if there are alternatives: say, “meet” in Google Meets and solve questions online – why not use them? If a personal meeting is still necessary, at least in one direction you can try to drive on the ground.

Compensate.
But not with the airlines that are engaged in greenwashing. And with organizations that really make the world a better place.

You’ve probably heard about Ryanair and Lufthansa cases. If not, the airlines have been heavily criticized for “unethical marketing.” All these “green” fees, which are recommended to be paid together with the ticket, almost do not compensate for your emissions in any way. 20% of the amount goes to eco–friendly fuel, 80% – to projects (about which no one hears anything later).

Use advanced travel services.
Perhaps you usually go to Skyscanner for tickets. Did you know that the site has the option Skyscanner Greener Choices? Flights that are marked in the section with a green leaf come out more environmentally friendly. Flights whose CO2 emissions are below the average for a particular route are placed there. By the way, on Booking.com you can also choose more sustainable housing options.
